How the tire quiz works

How matches are ranked, where the scores come from, and what happens to your answers

How does the quiz pick my tires?

First it filters: tires must be sold in your size, match the type you chose (all-season, all-weather, winter, and so on), stay under your budget, and include every must-have you selected. Then it ranks what’s left. About 62% of each match score comes from how well the tire scores on the priorities you picked (your first pick counts a little more than your second), about 26% from its price within your budget, and about 12% from owner ratings. Price can decide close calls, but it won’t push a clearly better tire below a weaker, cheaper one. If you choose “Best tire for me,” price isn’t used in the ranking at all. You see the top 20 matches.

Where do the performance scores come from?

Each tire has scores from 0 to 10 for things like wet traction, snow traction, comfort, noise, tread life, and fuel efficiency. They are generated with AI from manufacturer specs and published reviews, and they are labeled as AI generated on each tire’s page along with the sources behind them. Treat them as a guide for comparing tires, not as lab test results.

Why does the quiz ask what I drive?

Your vehicle tells us your exact tire size. With it, the quiz only recommends tires actually sold in that size, shows the lowest current price in that size, and sets the budget ranges from what tires in your size really cost. For staggered setups with different front and rear sizes, it only shows tires made in both. You can enter your size directly instead, or skip the step, but then results can include tires that don’t come in your size, and prices show each tire’s cheapest size.

Is my ZIP code stored?

No. Your ZIP code is only used in your browser to suggest a tire type for your climate. It isn’t saved, and it isn’t included in the results link. You can skip it and pick a type yourself.

Do tire brands pay to be recommended?

No. Results are ranked only by the formula described above. No brand or retailer can pay to appear in the quiz or to rank higher. TreadCompass may earn a commission if you buy through a retailer link, but that never affects which tires are recommended or in what order.

Why isn’t a tire I expected in my results?

The most common reasons are that it isn’t sold in your size, its price is above your budget, it doesn’t have a must-have you selected, or it doesn’t match the tire type you picked. A tire also needs performance scores or owner ratings before it can be ranked. You can look up any tire directly in Tire Reviews.

What if I get no matches?

Try loosening your answers: choose a higher budget, drop a must-have, or pick a different tire type. Some types, like dedicated winter or run-flat tires, aren’t made in every size. Use Edit answers on the results page to change them without starting over.

Can I save or share my results?

Yes. Your answers are saved in the page link, so you can bookmark it or send it to someone and they’ll see the same matches. You can also re-sort results by price, owner rating, or tread life without redoing the quiz.
